olorado State University is the agricultural university in Colorado, and consequently conducts agricultural research on high-elevation fruit and vegetable crops. Some of the control plots have been farmed organically and could be certified organic, but the majority of the property could not be certified organic for three years. 17 acres of the irrigated ground is in alfalfa production, which is producing an astounding yield of 7 tons to the acre.
Other crops that have been grown on the property include sweet peppers, tomatoes, onions, sweet corn, eggplant, and even kabocha squash, which produced twice the normal sugar content.
The climate on Rogers Mesa, west of Hotchkiss, Colorado, is milder than many other parts of the state. The mesa is blanketed with fruit orchards producing cherries, peaches, apples, plums, pears, and apricots, as well as several vineyards.
This farm has excellent potential to be a revenue-producing sustainable farm. It has direct access onto well-traveled Highway 92 and has excellent visibility from the road.
